Originally the inhabitants of Odisha belong to Sabara tribe which has distinct civilization. Odisha with its  rich cultural heritage lie in the eastern coast of India. This is also known as Kalinga, Utkala or Odra and Koshala during various periods. It is rich in its historical monuments, traditional arts, sculpture, dance and music. Odisha has some world’s renowned temples like Jagannath temple in Puri, Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar which is revered among the world heritage monuments. Odisha has a unique presence in the field of art, craft and culture, which is widely appreciated across the globe. The state hosts various events, religious and cultural festivals that depict its rich and colorful heritage.  


 Pattachitra Painting

Pattachitra painting is a form of art which is famous for its intricate work and the mythological stories that it narrates. It is believed to be started in the 12th Century and is one of the oldest and popular art form originated in Odisha. They are carved and painted on a canvas or leave with rich organic colors, which depicts the creative and delicate work of artisans, which is primarily associated with the culture, incarnations and life of Shri Jagannath and the tradition and culture of ‘Puri Jagannath’ temple. It is believed that every year during “Debasnana Purnima” the deities take bath in cold water and fall sick for a period of 15 days which is known as ‘Anasana’. During this period as the deities remain in isolation from the rest of the world, the artisans create painted and crafted replica of the three deities to show and re-live their devotion. The artisans belong to a small village of Puri known as ‘Raghurajpur’, where each family is actively associated in making crafts such as patta painting, wooden toys, stone carvings, etc.
