Vijaya Dashmi
Here
comes the most awaited festival and celebration. It is one of the grand
festivals of India Dussehra also known as Vijaya Dashmi. It is the celebration
of Hindu Goddess Durga who has many names such as Bhavani, Amba,
Chandika, Gauri, Parvati, Mahishasuramardini which is mostly famous in West
Bengal. She is the Mother goddess’ and the ‘Protector of the Righteous’ to
Hindu devotees. In the northern and southern states, it implies the victory of
Lord Ram over Ravana. Specifically in northern India it is celebrated as
Navratri(nine nights) and the last four days of Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami,
Maha Navami and Vijay Dashami are mostly important. It is
a celebration of divine feminine power and victory over the evil demon
‘Mahishasura’ who was blessed not to be defeated by any man or God. Odisha is
no less; it is a state of religious sentiments. The spirit of holiness and
sanctity during this festival is outstanding in Odisha. People celebrate this
festival by singing, dancing, decorating their house with lights, flowers and
many more decorative things. The city becomes so lively with so many
pandals/mandaps (stages), which further elevates the festive atmosphere. This
festival always reminds us that divine wins from evilness. To add some points,
puja celebration is incomplete if there are no food stalls, handicraft and
handloom stalls, or local market shops. This Hindu festival symbolizes the
goodness on earth.
